ESS Modular (Cambridge)

Description:

Part of the ESS Group, ESS Modular is one of the industry leaders in modern methods of construction (MMC) in the UK and Ireland. On this project, ESS were hired by the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH) to deliver a range of new wards for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, a renowned teaching hospital and research centre. To control the security for a sensitive and functioning hospital site, ESS Modular appointed Nation Facilities and Security Manager to provide the biometric turnstiles.

Upon instruction, ESS went on to utilise other services from the business including the recruitment of a gateman for the site through Nation.

ESS Modular used the dual in-person and technological security solution on a daily basis. The biometric turnstiles not only uses facial recognition technology to control access to authorised personnel, but also measured entrants’ temperatures to check for signs of flu or Covid-19. Entrants had to pass both tests in order to gain access to the site.

With the timing of the project being in the midst of the pandemic, the temperature installed also minimised the number of contagious personnel entering the site, which not only reduced the spread of infection to colleagues and hospital staff, but also kept the project delivery schedule on track.

Our broad range of security solutions gave ESS the flexibility to upgrade as their requirements would change. For example, ESS updated the security settings – i.e. who was allowed on site or adding fingerprint scanning – simply by using a computer, while they easily changed the gateman’s shifts to cover new hours and add new shifts as the installation developed.
